Transportation, Moving Supplies, and a Long-Distance Move With a Newborn

Blog

Are you moving across the country—with a new baby? From transportation to moving supplies, take a look at how you can make the process easy and stress-free.

Choose the Right Moving Company

A move from one state to another, or even a cross-country move, involves a complex set of challenges—especially when you have a newborn to care for. Local moving companies may not have the ability or equipment to safely or efficiently transport your belongings over long distances.

If you want to save money and feel confident in your ability to move yourself from coast to coast, a moving truck rental is an option to explore. But if you need extra help, consider a moving company.

Before you sign a moving contract, ask:

  • Are you primarily a long distance company? A mover who has minimal long-distance experience or only takes on these types of jobs a few times a year may not have the knowledge you need right now.
  • What services do you offer? Extra services may make it easier to balance your new baby's needs with the move. These could include packing and unpacking, or help with the overall organization. Some (but not all) movers may also provide containers or boxes.
  • Why should a customer choose your company? You want to make the most out of the move. This means you need the best mover possible. Ask the company for a candid self-reference to better understand the benefits they offer.

With a new baby to care for, you need a moving contractor who can handle every step of this journey with minimal oversight. The more experience the mover has, the more time you'll have to focus on your newest family member.

Pick the Right Moving Supplies

Now that you've chosen to either rent a truck or hire a cross-country mover, it's time to pack. Unlike moves during your solo days, this one comes with plenty of baby gear. To pack your newborn's room, you'll need:

  • Plastic bins. Use these sturdy containers to pack everything from your baby's bottles to their crib sheets and mattress pads.
  • Tote bags. Pack light-weight items such as cloth toys or receiving blankets in canvas tote bags for an easy move.
  • Labels. Label every box, bin, and bag. Include the items and room where they belong in your new home.
  • Bubble wrap. Your baby's table lamp, picture frames, and other fragile items need protection for the long move. Bubble wrap is a simple solution.

Along with these supplies, you may need moving quilts to cover and protect the crib, bassinet, or other larger items during the long-distance move.
