Tips For Packing A Storage Unit

Blog

Are you getting ready to load up self storage unit rentals for the first time? If so, you don't want to make any mistakes when it comes to packing. Here are a few ideas for keeping items safe and to make the most with the room that you have in storage.

Label Every Box

Now is not the time to get lazy when it comes to labeling boxes. You don't know when the next time will be that you'll need to find something in storage, and not labeling boxes and make it difficult to find things or cause you to accidentally break something. Make sure to mark boxes as fragile if there is anything in them that can become damaged if you handle the box too rough. You should also make a note of the contents inside the box so that you do not have to open it up to see what's inside.

Pack Heavy Items Near The Back

There is some logic that goes into how a storage unit should be packed, which involves taking all your heavy items and placing them near the back of the unit. When a storage unit is packed tightly, you will likely have to move things around when the time comes to get something out of storage. Having all those heavy items in the front or middle of the storage unit will make things difficult for you. Line the back wall with things that you don't want to have to move frequently.

Disassemble Furniture If It's Possible

Don't make the mistake of thinking that you can fit furniture in the storage unit without disassembling it somewhat. You may be saving time when putting the item into storage, but you won't be doing yourself any favors when it comes to saving space. If you have the ability to easily disassemble and item and make it smaller than do so. For example, a desk with a hutch may be disassembled to remove the hutch or a table that can have the legs removed.

Create An Inventory

It will help to create an inventory of everything that is in the storage unit so that you know what is inside it. If not, you could end up rummaging through boxes due to not knowing what is in the unit. Make sure to keep an ongoing list as you pack things up, which will make it easy to search on your phone or computer when it is time to look for something.
