Why Self-Moving Is Complicated

Blog

Do you think you can save money by hiring a rental truck instead of a moving company? Before you answer that question, familiarize yourself with the following complications you may face with your rental truck:

You Will Need Helpers

When you hire a moving company, you can depend on them to handle every aspect of the move from packing, loading, and overloading. In such a case, you can complete your move without additional helpers. When you opt for a rental truck, all these tasks fall on you, and you won't be able to handle the move without helpers. Therefore, you will either need great friends or family members to assist you or you will need hired help. In either case, you risk damage to your items since they will be handled by those who aren't used to the task.

You May Be Surprised by "Hidden" Expenses

One of the best things about using moving companies is that you pay a certain amount of money that includes every aspect of the move. When using a rental truck for the move, you must pay a myriad of expenses, and it is easy to overlook some of them when budgeting your move. Apart from the obvious expenses such as rental fee and fuel, other "hidden" expenses to expect include parking fees, toll fees, unexpected breakdowns, and insurance fees, among other things. When using a moving company, you may not even realize that they must cater for these and other associated fees.

You Need to Familiarize with the Route

The third complication of handling a self-move is that you may need to familiarize yourself with the route. This is necessary if you haven't driven that route before or have only driven it in a small vehicle, and you don't know the problems you may face with a large truck (assuming that is what you plan to rent) on the same roads.

Will you be able to make the sharp corners? What are the maximum weights allowed on the route? Are there obstructions that a truck of the height you are planning to use may not pass through? How is the typical traffic on the route? These are some of the questions your familiarization drive should answer; otherwise, you may meet unexpected obstacles on your moving day.

As you can see, renting a moving truck isn't a walk in the park for the uninitiated. Think carefully before going down that route; you might just realize that contracting a moving company is a better option.
